Mel Torme   1926 - 1999

The great Jazzman with your web host

June 6, 1999
San Francisco

I'd love to tell you I knew him well.

That pleasure eluded me. I did get to spend one memorable evening with this musical giant a few years back. To tell you the truth we had the most fun that night not talking up music or show biz. We 'kvelled' about food and circled our host's buffet table several times 'ooh-ing and ahh-ing.

If you ever get a chance, pick up Mel's auto-biography. It's a great read, especially when he unveils Judy Garland's wee hour "phone raids."

Phil Elwood's summation- "The greatest, most versatile musical entertainer in America is gone."
